Student reflections on SLAM

Sup this is Noah. Slam is an awesome experience to learn about another culture and how they do stuff. We learned how to smudge each other with sage and an eagle feather. Ha, Amber didn’t get one. It was cool. We built a ramp and laid a drive way. I caught two turkeys Tom and 2pac. I also made out with two dogs. But it was a cool way to experience service.

Hello this is Brittany here :D anyways I had so much fun this week at SLAM. I had lots of fun building the ramp and getting to know the people that we built it for. The kids were really nice to us all. They respected us all. The fun part of this week was everything. I learned a lot about the Indians and a lot about my culture in its self. The whole thing with Noah and making out with the dogs was so funny. We all laughed about it for like ever. All in all this week was really fun and I learned a lot in such a little amount of time that I was there. At first when I got here I was a little disappointed because I expected something different than what had happened but in the end it was still fun, and I am still really glad I came on this trip. It was one of my highlights of this summer. I will always remember what happened this past five days :D

Hey, it’s Brandi(:
So leaving for SLAM I was like pretty excited, but I didn’t know what to expect. Seeing our worksite was pretty cool. The little kids were the cutest. I really liked the sense of accomplishment whenever the final project came out. I’d have to say the most fun I’ve had this week has been at Cory’s house. We’ve been there twice now, both times were really cool. The first time we went we participated in an Indian style worship circle. That was cool to see. Then tonight we had this awesome dinner of fresh salmon and fry bread, it was really good. We’ve been learning a lot and having a lot of fun and becoming better friends within our own group and with the other group that’s here with us. I’m really glad I joined this trip, and I’m thankful to have been a part of all of this and I hope we come back next year. (:

Hey hey hey hey its ammmbbbeerrr ^.^
Annyyyywaaayysss this week has gone by in a flash! From worship circles to exotic dances! As our service project we got the chance to build and ramp for a very friendly family. It took a lot of hard work and I learned a lot. Caitlynn and I decided that we are gonna have a farm with barfing chickens and biting horses, and to support our lifestyle needs we are gonna run a nail company with the motto, we hammer it good . I learned how to hammer pretty well and used an electric screw driver. I kind of failed at that but it was still fun. This trip gave me the opportunity I was searching for, to learn about another culture other then my own. It just amazed me on how we are similar but also different. For example we had the chance to participate in an Indian worship circle. We had to use this root called sage and bring the smoke towards us to free and clear our minds. Surprisingly, it did work sort of. Sure it was a little awkward but a good learning experience. Another thing we did was go to a museum about the Yakama Indians. I found it super interesting. My favorite part of this whole trip was being able to meet and get closer to the people around me. I absolutely loved SLAM. And I am sure ill return again and again cause it was the most eye opening experience a person could ever have and yeah. The Salmon dinner was delicious by the way, cait and I had THREEE servings of it, and the bread thingy was good tooooo! Even though I had a blast here im excited to come home and start my own nation, with the people I care about most all connected through god and Jesus. So night guys and see you soon♥

Hey, its Caitlynnnnnnnnnnnn(;
Well, SLAM was such a great experience, at first I was super nervous about going but from the time I got here I’ve been having fun!! (: I learned sooo much the time I have been here, its was so much fun building the ramp, and seeing how they do things differently than us the people we built the ramp for people who owned some chickens and horses and turkeys and a couple rabbits when we first got to the site we were greeted by the oldest of there three kids who was only 6 years old he showed us around let us hold the chicks and pet the rabbits and just a whole bunch of things before there was stuff we actually had to do. I was amazed at the things that were there . Building the ramp was such a great experience, me and Amber had to hammer some nails in and it wasn’t so easy and we messed up a few times but we worked through it, the people and there kids were super nice to us and very appreciative. I was happy to know that we had helped someone out . I had tons of fun the whole time we were here the, drum circles hanging out, meeting new people, and just everything was such a great experience for me. I could stay here forever but I am starting to miss home so I am happy to be leaving tomorrow. Good Night and see you guys when we get back (:

An important announcement regarding First Covenant Youth Ministry

I just returned from the Youth Nexus event that I attended with Garion N and Sarah D.  The theme of our week was “Live the Story.”  As an illustration of our stories we had a chance to make little weavings or tapestries, and talked about how, like our weaving, we have a choice, with God’s help to make our life something that is beautiful and useful.

We learned about how God’s story shapes our story, like the Bible characters Joseph and Mary or theologians Dietrich Bonheoffer or Augustine.

We can choose to live ethically, taking a stand against injustice.  We can choose to live intentionally, in a healthy Christian community.  And we can choose to live in a close walk with God, trusting Him through the good and bad, and following Him when He chooses to start a new chapter in our lives.

As Youth Nexus drew to a close and we, and all of our new friends from all over the country, were preparing to go home I started thinking about how God ends chapters in our lives.  It can be painful to experience endings, but the characters and places in that chapter aren’t being written out of the story, they are just going to take on a new role as the story continues.  Sarah, Garion and myself don’t know when God will bring one of our Youth Nexus friends or North Park University back into the spotlight in our life in a future chapter of our story.  Through the endings we need to hold onto how we have been changed, and blessed, and what we have learned through what has occurred.

With all that being said, it is time to announce that the Lord is leading the Menge family into a new chapter of our lives.  Through one of those “coincidences” only God can arrange, I have been offered a Director of Children’s Ministries position at another church, and we feel it is God’s will that I take it.  So with mixed emotions, we know that the role you have all played for nearly five years as characters in our story is changing, but hopefully not ending.
I will be continuing in my position at First Covenant until Sunday, August 15th, after the SLAM trip.  We are hosting a hot dog roast at our house on Tuesday, August 3rd as a going away party of sorts.

We will be praying for you all and we are excited to see how God will lead First Covenant Church.  We also would love your prayers for us throughout this massive change for our family, as we follow God’s leading into a new chapter of our lives.

through Christ's love,
Melanie Menge
Director of Youth Ministries
First Covenant Church

We've boarded the plane!

We should land around 5:30 pm.

Sarah's Youth Nexus blog

Even though there are many things I could say about how great Youth Nexus was, I can only say these few words: God is so great. The people in Youth Nexus became our family and we all continued our story together. We shared together our cultures, our pain, and our laughter. Jesus brought us together and helped us get out of our comfort zone to become leaders and relate to one another.
“It was a weaving of stories that make up a part of the kingdom” (Anonymous youth volunteer from Alaska named Kevin) says and that’s the best way I can think of to describe Nexus.
So, God is great and he made us differently so we can come together and enjoy each other.
God is good, all the time, all the time, God is good.
